Royal Blenheim Apricot
Arguably, the best tasting variety of apricots. Other apricots are huge and bright, and "I'd rather eat a cotton ball," says one produce specialist for Greenlear Produce in San Francisco. However, while the Royal Blenheim (or just "Blenheim") apricots are the most coveted of apricot varieties, they are also quickly disappearing from the orchard landscape with few growers left where they are mostly grown in the Sacramento and Santa Clara valleys in California. They are poor travelers and many growers have abandoned the Blenheim in favor of varieties that have a longer shelf life and can travel long distances, so often the only place to find them are local farmer markets -- where we source ours. They are exceptional for jam! Please join us in supporting the California growers that are keeping this wonderful variety alive. The Blenheim Apricot is on the Slow Food USA's Ark of Taste, foods facing extinction.
