Rhubarb

Rhubarb. Is it a fruit or a vegetable? It's technically a vegetable but in 1947, a NY Court pronounced it as a fruit, as it is mostly treated as a fruit (allegedly, at that time, to avoid paying additional taxes)  It's firm and fleshy, not unlike celery, but its tartness lends itself to jamming admirably.  Field-grown season is relatively short. 
 
Rhubarb has become one of Elaine's favorites for pairing with spicy and savory foods.  She has discovered the joy of a sandwich made with a hearty sourdough bread (lightly toasted) with leftover roast turkey, lettuce, tomato, stuffing and using Rhubarb jam instead of cranberry jelly (a hint for after-holiday meals!).
